Welcome to another quarterly mailing. Communications such as
this provide added value and another reason to remain on support.
This mailing combines Domain and HP-UX news since a third of you
use a mix of Domain and HP-UX (Series 300/400) operating systems
and platforms. Many Domain users have expressed interest in news
of the HP-UX operating environment, even if they have no
immediate plans to move to it. HP-UX users want to know what
they can expect from an extended support life. To compare the
level of support for Domain over a year ago to that being
proactively delivered today is to see an altogether better and
exciting picture, one that can be repeated for HP-UX.
For Domain users, this mailing marks the first year of
Hewlett-Packard's commitment to the renewed support of the
Domain operating system. As with earlier communications, it also
provides you the opportunity to affect the continued life of the
products you depend on.
For HP-UX users, this mailing represents a similar opportunity:
Insight to the commitment HP communicated to you in April -- to
support the 68K HP-UX (Series 300/400) operating system at least
through the year 2000 -- and to encourage your involvement in
its future.
Early on, Domain users identified three major areas of
improvement. (1) Communication; (2) Patch/release process; (3)
Enhancement or feature/functionality requests. We responded with
increased communication, in part with these mailings and other
avenues such as the trade press, postings to comp.sys.apollo, HP
SupportLine and involvement with user groups such as InterWorks,
HP/Works and InterWorks-Japan. We investigated the Domain
patch/release process and targeted communication of patch
availability and patch documentation for improvement.
Feature/functionality requests have been addressed by a new
update of Domain SR10.4. A rollup of Domain SR10.3.5 patches is
also available. (See inside.) Overall process improvement is
targeted and underway.
In terms of general concerns, Domain and HP-UX users are very
similar as you'll see in the enclosed overview of the surveys
done in April. Communication, the patch process and
features/functionality improvements top your support list for
both operating systems. As we have done with Domain, we intend
to address HP-UX concerns and supply those improvements you
identify as being important to you. We appreciate your responses
and will continue to give you ample opportunity to influence our
work.
Inside you will find:
o Programs -- Overview of HP-UX and Domain survey results;
Open Migration Program Channel Partner update**
o Processes -- HP SupportLine; Domain patch index available
o Products -- X11R5 on Domain; UEDK 2.0; Domain SR 10.3.5
patch bundle; NFS 2.3; X terminal-like configuration; Serial
Performance with Domain systems
o User Group News -- HP/Works, Interex and Interworks
o Post-paid comment card
The vocal minority (10-15% of Domain support customers and
15-20% of Series 300/400 HP-UX support customers) are actively
influencing the future of these products. While all comments
help guide our efforts, if you'd like to contribute to a
majority opinion, or make a dissenting vote, send us your
thoughts. (Use the enclosed post-paid card.)
Remember that we've had a year's concerted effort to work on
Domain issues, so this mailing's content may appear to favor
Domain news and results. As we continue to hear from and work
with HP-UX users, and as we deliver against your top support
requirements, the content will balance out. In the meantime, see
what we have to offer.
Sincerely,
Douglas K. Blackwood
Product Line Manager
Software Technology Division
P.S. You'll continue to hear from us every three to four months.
If you receive multiple copies of this mailing, please provide
copies of all mailing labels to us. And, of course, we welcome
your comments.
